ui.dev and Fireship are joining forces. That means we’ll be working together on Fireship videos, courses, the Bytes newsletter, and other developer content.
It also means that Fireship Pro subscribers now get access to react.gg, query.gg, and all the other ui.dev courses, and ui.dev subscribers get access to all the Fireship Pro courses (without needing to pay any more money). All of that course content now lives on the new fireship.dev platform.
We’re also hiring full-time developers who can help us make great technical content, so check out fireship.dev/jobs if you’re interested in joining our team.
Below are answers to some common questions we’ve seen for Fireship and Jeff, then ui.dev and Tyler.
Fireship FAQs (with Jeff)
Q. Did Fireship sell out to private equity?
If by “sell out” you mean “I sold part of the business so that Fireship could keep growing,” then sure. If you mean, “I cashed out and handed over Fireship to a faceless investment firm that’s cutting costs and profit-maxxing the channel,” then no.
I sold a stake in Fireship to a company called Electrify. They’re helping me build a team (along with ui.dev) so I can just focus on making videos. I still have creative control over what we publish.
Q. Does this mean you’re going away or stepping back?
No. I’m still working on every video and voicing every video.
Q. Why didn’t you say anything about this til now?
Because there wasn’t much to announce. When Electrify first invested 18 months ago, nothing about the channel changed for at least a year. Then we started building more of a team, adding more sponsors, and now merging with ui.dev. So this felt like a good time to share more context.
Q. Are they forcing you to do more ads?
No, that’s been my call and will continue to be up to me, Tyler, and the team. Sponsors are obviously a tradeoff, but they allow us to build a team and keep making the kind of content we want. We’ll keep ads at the end of videos (not in the first 60 seconds like most youtubers) and only promote stuff we actually like and use ourselves.
Q. Are you using AI to make videos?
No. That’s lame and it wouldn’t work anyway. My youtube voice has always sounded semi-robotic, but we’ve never used AI for voiceovers, visuals, or anything else. That won’t change.
Q. Does Jeff still control Fireship?
Yes, I still have creative control over what we make and I am not locked in anyone’s basement.
Q. Is Jeff a real human being?
Unclear.
Q. I have an active subscription to Fireship Pro. How do I get access to the ui.dev courses?
We’re sending out an email with more instructions, but you won’t need to pay anything else to get access.
Q. What are you hiring for?
We’re hiring technical people who can help us make great content. The biggest thing we need right now is developers who can write about technical topics in a way that’s smart but entertaining. Video editing, shitposting, and generally making stuff that developers like is also a plus. Check out fireship.dev/jobs for more info.
ui.dev FAQs (with Tyler)
Q. What does this mean for ui.dev?
The ui.dev content and platform are now moving to fireship.dev. All ui.dev blog posts and courses will now live there along with Fireship Pro content. The goal is to bring everything under one roof and make it easier to build and maintain great developer content long-term.
Q. Why merge with Fireship?
Jeff and I have talked about working together for years. He makes the best developer content on YouTube, and developers love our courses and newsletter, so it’s always felt like a great fit. Electrify invested in ui.dev after investing in Fireship, which enabled us to do the merger and start building the combined team we’ve talked about building for a long time.
Q. Is anything changing with react.gg, query.gg, and other ui.dev courses?
The courses will stay the same, they just live in the new fireship.dev platform now. If you buy a fireship.dev subscription, you’ll now get access to all of the Fireship Pro and ui.dev courses for the same price as before.
Q. I have an active ui.dev subscription. How do I get access to the existing Fireship Pro courses?
We’re sending out an email with instructions, but you won’t need to pay anything extra to get access to the Fireship Pro courses.
